This is a 5 x 7.5 inch, 126 page, paperback book entitled Historical Sketches of the Violin and Its Master Makers from 1900. It cost 20 cents new and was Printed for Lyon & Healy by R.R. Donnelly and Sons Co. at the Lakeside Press, Chicago . The preface begins with The newspaper items one sees now and then about the exhorditant prices of old violins has befogged the public mind on the subject, so that people generally believe that it is nessessary to spend a small fortune in order to secure one of these old instruments ..... In the following pages will be found descriptions and prices of the greatest collection of old instruments-Violins, Cellos, Violas and Basses- ever offered the American public. A very important feature of this catalog is the HISTORICAL SKETCH of violin making and violin makers which precedes the catalog proper . Some of the topics include The Brescian School ..... The Cremonese School ..... Rare Old Violins ..... The Venetian School ..... The Neapolitan School .... Florence, Milan, Padua, Modena, etc. ....... The French Workmen ...... The German Makers ...... ~ Andreas Guarnerius fecit Cremona ~ Sub titulo Santa Teresia 1695 This magnificent violin has for many years been in possession of the descendants of Charles Frederick Durner, founder of the DURNER ORGAN WORKS - Quakertown, Pennsylvania, which operated from 1861 to 1932. Mr. Durner may have inherited the violin and, if so, would have been brought to the United States when he emigrated in 1859. This scenario could have been possible through Rosina Gauibier, a young French lady (of perhaps some nobility) when she married Conrad Durner, whom for a short while, received additional training from an organ builder in Lyon, France. The Durner family had also intermarried with the Goll family, the patriarch of which, Johann Ludwig Goll, founded the GOLL ORGAN COMPANY in about 1740 in Weilheim, Germany. Rosina (Gauibier) Durner was the great-great-grandmother of Harold Frederick Fluck Durner (1890-1967) whom, again possibly, would have inherited the violin from his forebears, retaining ownership until his death. It is known to have then passed into the hands of Harold s niece, Mary Jane Levenknight, who was the adopted daughter of Laura Catherine Fluck Durner Levenknight and Augustus Henry Levenknight. Mary Jane married Mr. Thomas J. Himmelsbach Sr. of Quakertown. I acquired the violin some years ago through the auspices of Thomas Himmels ...
