The one piece maple back of medium to narrow curl running straight across. The ribs of faint narrow curl. (The lower bout rib has an ebony insert, centered on the tail pin.) The (original) neck and head of wood similar to the back. The reddish orange varnish over a golden yellow ground. Length of back: 356 mm - Condition: Varnish top coats highly worn. Considerable wear to the top plate under the bridge feet. Not a single crack to be found, anywhere. - (In old and worn leather covered case with bow). Known owners: For many years the property of Ms. N. Cole, of Illinois, amateur violinist. I hereby certify and guarantee this magnificent (unlabeled) Italian violin to be the authentic work of Joseph Antonio Guarneri del Gesu, Cremona, circa 1734-1740. Will provide new owner with a full written account of all known (historically relevant) circumstances regarding discovery, acquisition, and subsequent identification. A CD-Rom will also be provided with many images comparing this instrument with other (similar) examples of the period I also know to be by Joseph Antonio Guarneri del Gesu. Hand rubbed satin finish. All hardware was polished and sealed. Piano action was rebuild with new Reener parts and has original polished ivory key tops.
